“2012 looks really good with the new faces,” zei hij. “It seems the real cream of the crop is rising out of the ’QS at the moment with people like Kolohe Andino coming through which will be awesome. I can’t wait to see how he goes and then you’ve got your Gabriels (Medina) so it should be a really exciting year”.

“I think they will all live up to the hype. The way the Tour is there are a lot of events in really good waves so I think one of the scariest blokes will be John John (Florence).” And of course there is 11-time World Champion Kelly Slater showing no signs of slowing down”.

“He’s a freak, he’s like ET,” Parkinson said. “He’s unbelievable and just an amazing human so in tune with his body and so in tune with everything around him. I think if he had been talented in any other sport he would have won 11 world titles in that as well.”

Ondanks zijn status als veteraan en een stel enthousiaste jonge rookies een poging doen om hem achterna te zitten, is Parkinson’s gevoel verfrist. Hij eindigde sterk vorig jaar met twee seconden en een vijfde en gelooft dat een meer ontspannen benadering de sleutel was tot zijn succes aan het einde van het jaar.

“At the end of last year I just enjoyed myself and enjoyed everything about the Tour,” Aldus Parkinson. “For the last few years I’ve been going so hard, five or six days a week with a full-on regime living and breathing training and getting fit”.

“I’m still training, doing two or three days here and there, but I’m just more focussed on enjoying my surfing. I feel if I’m enjoying my surfing and I’m enjoying everything about competition then I’ll probably have a lot more longevity and better results.”

Het is niet alleen zijn lichaam dat zich verfrist voelt, Parkinson heeft een nieuwe koker van zijn shaperJS Industries en kon niet gelukkiger zijn met de veelbelovende weers voorspelling voor de start van het evenement. “There’s no-one who can’t surf well out there so everyone starts the year equally,”

“I’ve picked a few new boards up and probably been through about 10 out of the 12. I’m down to about four really good gems that I could easily start the year with, which I’m pretty happy about. Now we’re just hoping for some waves at Snapper.”

“There have been years when this approach has been a little frustrating but it’s also sort of a wildcard way of deciding” zei Slater. “I’ve had good success on the Goldy and this year should be fun again. I can’t wait to be there. I’m undecided as to whether I’ll apply full-time. That’s probably no secret. I’ll go by feel and whatever feels right internally, I’ll stick with that.”

Op zijn minst weten we hoe hij zich voelt over de aankomende Quicksilver Pro Gold Coast, daar word gesurfd van 25 februari tot en met 7 maart in Australië. Slater wil alweer winnen, net zoals hij deed in 2006, 2008 en 2011.

Kelly Slater is nu alweer 40 jaar oud, maar zijn rivalen verwachten nog steeds dezelfde oude “floridian”. “I have a few nagging injuries but overall I’m pretty good. I hurt my ribs pretty badly a couple weeks back but they should be okay by Snapper time. I do feel a little bit of issue there, but I’m planning on being healthier and stronger in the coming years”.

“I’m much better all around now than when I was 20. Probably the hold back is the overall desire to improve day to day. I focus more on enjoying my surfing than expanding day to day, but I still get kicked into gear when I see what everyone is working on and doing. Being in the environment on tour with the guys gets you going pretty quickly.”

Slater is zich aan het voorbereiden voor het Snapper Rocks evenement, en hij heeft zijn eigen regels. “I usually finish prepping for the start of the year by surfing Rincon,” aldus Slater.

“It’s easy to tune in boards quickly there to know what you’re dealing with. I’ve been scoring a lot of surf last few weeks. Probably more water time than normal. I haven’t been riding shortboards a lot though, focusing on mostly barrels and not necessarily performance so I’ll have to tune in to what I’ll have to do in Oz.”

De 2012 ASP top 34 zullen een historische gat zien tussen de leeftijd van de oudste surfer en de jongste surfer op het elite niveau. Terwijl een nieuwe generatie van surfers zich klaarmaakt om te strijden tijdens de ASP Dream Tour, is Slater opgewonden om te zien hoe ver de performance levels zullen gaan, vergeet de mind games. Wij weten dat hij ervoor zal gaan.

De classic eindigde enorm spannend, ‘het was een klassieke classic’. Tot In de laatste paar minuten bleven Bobby Martinez en Dane Reynolds zeer gewaagd aan elkaar.

Met nog 1 minuut te gaan had Reynolds een hoge score nodig om Martinez in te halen, Reynolds pakte een perfecte golf en pakte daarmee de 1e plaats.
Reynolds werd 1e met een score van 18.17, Martinez werd 2e met een score van 17.8.

Deze overwinning van de eerste overwinning van Reynolds sinds 11 jaar, Reynolds kon daar wel om lachen en legde uit ‘Dit is de eerste keer dat ik een contest heb gewonnen sinds 2001, dat is een lange tijd voor een surfer’.

Australische surfer Matt Banting maakt de week van zijn leven mee op dit evenement. Nog geen dag geleden wist hij de Pro Junior titel  te winnen en vandaag wint hij de Australian Open of Surfing men titel, en natuurlijk USD $25.000,- en 3500 ASP World tour ranking punten.

“This has been the best week of my life!” Aldus een super blije Matt Banting. “I’m so happy, this is the best feeling I’ve ever had! I’m shaking so much I can hardly talk. Evan (Gieselman) is a really good surfer, he was blowing up for the whole final, I was really scared. I was just lucky to start off well with a couple of good waves. I just want to thanks my Dad and Mum for supporting me, I love them!”

Zijn tegenstander Evan Gieselman bezorgde Matt Banting nog de nodige concurrentie in de finale maar verloor alsnog met 1 punt verschil.

“It was a good match-up, it was really fun surfing against Matt,” vertelt Evan Gieselman. “I really want to congratulate him, he surfed really well, and found a couple of good rights that let him do a couple of airs. I would have loved to have won, but 2nd is a great result. I’m doing the whole ASP Star Series this year and I’m looking to qualify for the ASP World Title Series at the end of the year, so this is a great start for me.”

Bij de dames werd er ook hard gestreden voor de titel in de finale. De finale ging tussen Sally Fitzgibbons en Sofia Mulanovich. Beide wisten een mooie score neer te zetten maar het was de perfect getimede turn van Sally Fitzgibbons die voor de winst zorgde. Zij behaalde dan ook haar titel, USD $8.000,-

“It’s unbelievable!” legt Sally Fitzgibbons uit. “I was just focusing on working through my boards and going through some heats and before I know it I’m in the final. Sofia (Mulanovich) is such a tough competitor, I knew she’d be able to get the score needed, so it was a nervous wait at the end there. To win in front of this crowd, with so much support feels amazing! Then to have won the US Open and then the first ever Australian Open back to back is a special achievement.”

De gehele film is opgenomen in Bali en Lombok waar gebruik werd gemaakt van de nieuwste film technieken, er is zelfs gebruik gemaakt van een op afstand bestuurbare helikopter.

Matt Banting is daar het levende bewijs van, nadat hij afgelopen weekend de finale behaalde van de Pro Junior wedstrijd wist hij vandaag ASP World Title surfers, Jordy Smith en Matt Wilkinson te verslaan.

“I’m rapt! I’m really happy with my surfing right now,” vertelt een enthousiaste Matt Banting. “I’ve made the final of the Pro Junior, and I’ve been surfing every day since then so I feel like I know the waves pretty well here. It’s great to have a heat with those guys, let alone win, they’ve been my heroes since I was a little kid.”

Joel Parkinson liet zien waarom hij in de top 10 van de ASP World Title rankings hoort. Hij wist zijn heat te winnen. En met als laatste move een big air-reverse schakelde hij de competitie definitief uit.

“It’s crazy sitting in the water and looking back at a packed out beach,” aldus Joel Parkinson. “The surf is small but we’re all dealing with the same conditions, I actually caught some fun ones. I’m a bit of a momentum builder, I don’t want to surf my best heat in the first or second round, I want to try and peak towards the end.”

Tomas Hermes kijkt ook terug op een uitdagende dag met moeilijke condites waarin het moeilijk is om de juiste golf te vinden voor airs en andere moves.

“The waves are like where I’m from in Brazil,” verklaart Tomas Hermes. “It’s feels great to win the heat because this contest is so hard and full of really good surfers. This event is huge, just like the US Open, it’s great to be here in Manly.”

In de laatste heat van de dag wist ook Taj Burrow zich te plaatsen voor de volgende ronde.

Op het moment zijn er ergens tussen de 47 en 63 miljoen surfboards wereldwijd in gebruik, het merendeel hiervan zal na enige jaren van intensief gebruik worden weggegooid omdat een surfboard simpelweg niet kan worden gerecycled. Dit project hoopt dat er, na de video en het eindresultaat, er opnieuw gekeken gaat worden om beter met het verwerken van o.a. surfboards om te gaan nadat ze zijn weggedaan.

Surfer Nat Young liet zien dat er ondanks de lage golven alsnog goed gescoord kon worden. Hij behaalde een perfecte score (een 10).

“That was the best wave I’ve had at Manly,” legt Nat Young uit. “I just made sure I didn’t fall because it was such a good wave and I didn’t want to ruin it. I just got here yesterday morning fromBraziland was jet-lagged all day. It was a mission to get here, but that heat was worth it, I’m glad to be here.”

Tiago Pires wist zijn heat net aan te halen. Tiago Pires lande in de ochtend op Sydney International Airport en door vertraging bij douane wist hij 5 minuten voor zijn heat alsnog op het evenement te arriveren. De ASP Word Tour surfer moest gelijk aan de gang want de heat was al 5 minuten bezig toen hij in het water ging. Dit was echter geen probleem voor Tiago Pires en hij wist zijn heat alsnog te winnen.

“I was hoping to be in one of the late heats of the day, but when I saw I was in heat 8 I knew it would be tight,” vertelt Tiago Pires na zijn heat “I landed at 8am and my shaper Chilli picked me up from the airport, I was getting my board ready and getting changed in the car and paddled out late for my heat. The waves have some push and they’re fun, I feel good to win that one.”

Josh Kerr wist met zijn grote arsenaal aan aerials de hoogste totale score van het evenement tot nu toe neer te zetten, dit was een score van 18.27 (van de 20).

“There was a couple of little waves out there and the wind is really good for airs today,” Aldus Josh Kerr. “It was hard to get the good ones, I wanted to go out there and do some turns, but it was so choppy and bumpy, but those chops are good to do some jumps off. I didn’t realise I the highest score the event, that’s cool. I was just stoked to do a stalefish air-reverse.”
