Event No. 5 of 7 on the 2012 ASP Women’s World Championship Tour, the Billabong Pro Rio culminated in a thrilling fashion this afternoon with both Fitzgibbons and Ho exchanging the Final’s lead multiple times before the hooter sounded.

In need of a high 7-point ride with just minutes remaining in the heat, Fitzgibbons bashed a blowing lefthander on her backside, notching a 7.93 out of 10 to take the elite win, her second of the year.

“That was so crazy and Coco (Ho) had me on the ropes for sure,” Fitzgibbons said. “I just had my fingers crossed and knew there would be one towards the end. I made a few mista kes and it happens in Finals but I was able to recover there at the end. I’m so excited.”

Fitzgibbons, current No. 2 on the ASP Women’s WCT, has significantly narrowed the gap between her and current ASP frontrunner Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 24, but remained humble in regards to her chase for the 2012 ASP World Title.

“This makes the World Title race more interesting, but thinking ahead, it’s still pretty far to go,” Fitzgibbons said. “There are still a couple of events, but to get a win, it’s an amazing result. To win at Bells too, it’s been an awesome year so far.”

Ho, who was ranked 12th on the ASP Women’s WCT ratings before the Billabong Rio Pro, had yet to advance beyond the Quarterfinals this year, but her Runner-Up finish to Fitzgibbons vaults the young Hawaiian to 9th in the world and restores her confidence to appropriate levels.

“This result really opens things up for me,” Ho said. “I’ve been having a really tough year and I’m stoked to get into this Final. This is my best result of the year and this has been an important event for me. Congrats to Sally on her win.”

Carissa Moore (HAW), 19, last year’s Billabong Rio Pro winner and reigning ASP Women’s World Champion, was edged out of a hard-fought battle against Fitzgibbons in their high-scoring Semifinal affair. Both competitors posted big-scores in the dying seconds of the heat, but it was Fitzgibbons who earned the best of the exchange, handing Moore and equal 3rd place result.

“I think we all want to make the Final and it’s disappointing,” Moore said. “I’ve lost to Sally (Fitzgibbons) twice this year and I’ve just got to keep trying in the next couple of events and that’s it.”

Moore, who was dominant over the co urse of 2011, has yet to find a win this year, but remains focused on attaining a strong performance to end out the season.

“I think it’s been a bunch of things this year,” Moore said. “I think finding the right waves is one thing overall and I need to switch it up and bring something different out.”

Alessa Quizon (HAW), 18, Billabong Rio Pro wildcard, put in an incredible performance at this year’s event, tearing through the world’s best female surfers and finding her way into the Semifinals. Quizon put up a good fight against fellow Hawaiian Coco Ho, but ultimately fell during last minute exchange, finishing with a respectable equal 3rd place finish overall.

“This has been an amazing event for me,” Quizon said. “I had nothing to lose and it’s been a great learning experience for me and I’m happy that I made it to the Semifinals. I could tell that Coco (Ho) was getting the scores that she needed and I was looking for one big score and I just didn’t find it. Sometimes it happens that way.”

Binnenkort zal er in de oude charcuterie een kleine surfshop geopend worden waarbij je o.a. boards van lokale shapers, biowax en surfart zult vinden. Tevens zal het shape-atelier openen waar je kunt leren hoe je een board shaped en repareert.

Bretagne is uitermate geschikt om te surfen voor zowel beginners als gevorderden. Charcuterie Surf House is centraal gelegen in de Baai van Audierne (regio zuid Finistère) waar binnen een straal van 30km vele baaitjes en lange zandstranden elkaar afwisselen. Door de grote diversiteit aan surfspots, van beachbreaks tot reefbreaks, vind je voor ieder niveau een perfecte spot. Dankzij de open geografische positie van de baai is er een extreem grote swell window waardoor er noord swell tot zuid swell wordt ontvangen zodat er bijna dagelijkse surfgarantie kan worden geboden.

De verschillende zoetwater rivieren die uitmonden in de oceaan, bieden volop mogelijkheden voor een tour met een Stand Up Paddle board. Ook voor beginnende surfers is dit een leuke afwisselende activiteit tijdens de vakantie.

Surfguiding is een standaard service die aangeboden wordt. Tijdens het ontbijt wordt er besproken met de gasten waar ze, afhankelijk de weersomstandigheden en surfniveaus van de gasten, die dag het beste kunnen surfen. Je wordt meegenomen langs de kust om de beste spots te ontdekken.

Voor de surflessen werken ze samen met de lokale Soul Surfing Skol. Julien is de instructeur en met veel respect voor de natuur en aandacht voor de veiligheid geeft hij les op de stranden van Plovan en Plouhinec.

Ontbijt is standaard inbegrepen en op verzoek kan er ook lunch en diner verzorgd worden. Voor groepen kan er naast het surfen ook andere activiteiten georganiseerd worden zoals o.a. golfen, stand up paddle tours en paardrijden op het strand.

Het mocht dan koud zijn voor de tijd van het jaar, de golven waren er niet minder om! Het was goed toeven aan de kust; golven voor de riders en een aangenaam zonnetje voor het publiek.  Er werd vandaag wederom gestreden voor het kampioenschap in de categorieën Open  Men, Open Women, Juniors, Longboard Women en Longboard Men.

De Franse gebroeders Feuillon wisten in de categorie Juniors geen revanche te nemen op Jelle de Roode. Makkelijk werd hem echter niet gemaakt maar de Roode wist zijn eerste positie van de tweede stop vast te houden!

Bij de Longboard Women ging Nienke Duinmeijer er met de winst vandoor en bij de Longboard Men is zelfs al de Nederlands Kampioen Longboarden van 2012 bekend; Pascal van der Mast, gefeliciteerd!.

Ook bij de Open Women werd er vandaag al een kampioene bekend maar niet zonder een spannende strijd. Dominga Valdes moest alles uit de surfkast trekken om Mirna Boelsma voor te blijven en het scheelde weinig. Helaas voor Boelsma, wist Valdes de winst te pakken en werd daarmee Nederlands Kampioene Open Dames van 2012.

Marijn Bouwmeester wist na een zeer spannende finale tegen Jappe Meijsing en Kasper Hamminga de winst te pakken bij de Open Men. Met deze uitslag kan Pascal van der Mast zich dus nog niet officieel Nederlands Kampioen Open Men 2012 noemen. En zal de strijd voor deze titel zich voortzetten in het najaar in Zandvoort.

Mede dankzij de medewerking van KNRM Lifeguards, Tobias van Tellingen (surfweer.nl), Strandpaviljoen WIJ, Surfles.nl en uiteraard de sponsoren Protest en Monster Energy is het gelukt om de contest tot een succes te maken.

“I injured the inside of my left heel in Java and then re-opened it again the following week at Cloudbreak,” Aldus Kelly Slater. “It became infected and I flew to Australia to get it treated and stitched in hopes of making it to Rio, if not for Round 1, at least for Round 2. I’ve been in the water since getting it stitched and while I can go straight, I can’t do turns at all right now so I’ll have to pull out of Rio. It’s unfortunate, but I’m just going to focus on healing up as soon as possible right now. Good luck to all the competitors in Brazil and I’ll be watching online.”

Het is een kort verhaal van een epische dag met enorme golven in maart 2012 bij Mullaghmore Head, County Sligo

“The yin and yang of a trip. The highs and the lows. The epic rides and the epic falls. Surfing isn’t a easy game to get right, once in a lifetime 50 ft faces followed by a endless search for shelter. Tides reveal dry reefs, squalls break promises. Rain dampens enthusiasm, talk of hidden secrets abound but the wind in it’s infinite wisdom keeps them just that, secret. There’s no urgency yesterday’s euthoria still burns. Another trip another day. No fathoms left to fall.”

Medina got the best of an opening exchange against Hall and held the lead throughout the heat’s entirety, marking him as the second consecutive Brazilian to win the Nike Lowers Pro following Miguel Pupo, 20, in 2011.

“This is a very special win and it has been a long week,” Medina said. “I’m going to Brazil now with more confidence and this has been great.”

Medina’s run at the Nike Lowers Pro was one of complete dominance, as the young Brazilian earned several of the event’s top scores including the only flawless 10-point ride en route to the event’s highest heat-total of 19.80 out of 20 in his Semifinals victory over Adrian Buchan (AUS), 29.

“I love Trestles so much,” Medina said. “It’s just such a good wave and it’s one of my favorites, I just don’t even have words to explain how I’m feeling right now. I’m stoked.”

Glenn Hall proved to be the dark-horse of the event, consistently putting on solid performances on both his forehand and backhand to top ASP World Championship Tour surfers Jeremy Flores, 24, and John John Florence, 19, on his way to the final, but was unable to surpass Medina, finishing runner-up overall.

“It’s Lowers, it can turn on or off at any time in the day. You kind of have to be on to it and luck has to go your way as well,” Hall said. “I had a few lucky heats earlier in the event and that heat was funny with Gabriel. I thought we were going to have an interference in the beginning and they didn’t call it, but it’s all good though. He surfed well and he won.”

Hall, who has been knocking on the door for elite ASP World Championship Tour qualification for several years, is hoping his result at the Nike Lowers Pro kick-starts his qualification campaign for 2013.

“This is a great result for sure,” Hall said. “The way the system is now, if you don’t get results in PRIME events, you don’t qualify, so I’m relieved with this result and am in a good position to try and qualify now. I’m going to do all of the PRIMES and see how we go.”

John John Florence was dangerous at this year’s Nike Lowers Pro, constantly dismantling the Lowers right-handers with stylish carves and massive aerials. Florence launched a full-rotation 360 air in his Semifinal against Glenn Hall for a 9-point score, but was unable to find a second backup score and finished equal 3rd overall.

“I kept having these slow heats and I tried to get a quick start and I just couldn’t put it together,” Florence said. “I had the one big air and got a good score and only needed a small score, I got it and then Micro got a score at the end.”

Florence’s equal 3rd place finish marked the end to an amazing win-streak for the young Hawaiian, who had consecutively won the ASP PRIME at Sunset Beach, the ASP 5-Star at Pipeline and the ASP PRIME at Margaret River. His equal 3rd place result at the Nike Lowers Pro continues to secure his position among the top competitors on the ASP World Ranking.

“I’m stoked to have made the Semis, but it would have been nice to have made the Final,” Florence said. “I was having fun and the waves have been fun all week, so I’m stoked.”

Adrian Buchan consistently put on polished performances at this year’s Nike Lowers Pro, but fell short of a Final berth when Gabriel Medina surfed a near-perfect 19.80 heat in their Semifinal clash and finished with an equal 3rd place result.

“Gabe surfed an amazing heat and obviously got the jump on me from the start,” Buchan said. “I didn’t feel like I ever really hit top gear. I feel like I surfed well in some of my other heats and didn’t catch the best waves, but I guess that’s something I can take away from this event and to still walk away with a 3rd, I’m happy. That heat was disappointing, but you can’t let Gabe have any of those lefts.”

Gabriel Medina won MVP for day four for an outstanding single maneuver. The win pocketed him $500 and the golden jersey for the day. Daily MVP winners John John Florence, Dane Reynolds and Gabriel Medina all went head-to-head in the Final Four, with Medina chosen as the event’s most groundbreaking surfer and overall event MVP adding another $1,500 to his day’s earnings. Het was even afzien de afgelopen dagen in la belle France bij het zien van de goede surfcondities in ons eigen kikkerlandje. Maar gelukkig, zoals altijd, komt er na regen zonneschijn en was het vandaag dan ein-de-lijk zover: de contest was AAN!

Na het checken van de condities gisterochtend, kregen de deelnemers groen licht. Er mocht dan toch echt gesurft gaan worden. De 1300 km met de auto zijn niet voor niks geweest!

Prachtig weer (Ja Nederland, de zon schijnt hier in Vieux Boucau), goede golven en een superieure sfeer zijn enkele trefwoorden van vandaag. En niet alleen de zon deed zijn best vandaag.. het ging er  heet aan toe in de strijd tussen de deelnemers! Wie er met de winst van de tweede stop vandoor zijn gegaan, wordt vandaag bekend gemaakt tijdens de Monster Energy Crowning Party.
